Our initial paperwork for the consultant is finished - we turned it in last week and are officially rolling! Our next step is to complete the home study - we plan to make some calls about that this week. In our home study, a social worker will gather information about us and our backgrounds by asking direct questions about our families, marriage, and our attitudes about adoption and parenting. Typically there are two or three interviews. At least one will be at our house. I've read that home studies ask similar questions to what a birth mother wants to know about us...stability, a solid marital relationship, love of children, and strong family values. Hopefully, it will begin to prepare us for a chat with a potential birth mother.
Anticipating the visit by the social worker, I feel the need to clean our entire house... ummm...have you met me? I'm a pack rat and probably still have my junior high notes from my friends somewhere in our computer desk. I know for a fact I still have my gray Barbie corvette. Why am I holding onto this? We have started cleaning a little - we straightened the garage - I hardly recognize it now! I'm pondering having a garage sale to get rid of some of our "junk." I'm not quite sure if I can part with the corvette though. Or my Dad's old softball cleats that I wore when I played church league in junior high and high school. Sensing a problem here? Matt is sitting behind me laughing - he's threatened to clean house while I am away one weekend. This makes me slightly nervous.
As always, thanks for your continuous prayers and encouragement! We're blessed!

AHHH! You haven't changed a bit!! I still remember your ROOM when we were in jr high/high school!! Matt, go ahead, give it a good cleaning while she's gone!! :-) So glad things are moving along in the process. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE YOU!!

I will so come help you. I'm good at this stuff. I'm pretty sure that's why we'll never get some randome pitcher or vase from some aunt Jamie can't remember who left him something because his mom is afraid I'll throw it away. I don't throw IMPORTANT stuff away...but I can cut through some clutter and ENJOY it! Betsy does still talk about our last garage sale when I made them each pick 6 stuffed animals to keep and the others were put out or given away. I feel some guilt. :) Really...I will help if you get serious! I enjoy organizing. I'm weird.
ReplyDeleteI am laughing as I read this. I need to part with half the junk in my house. We are praying for your journey through this process. Love you both! Keep us informed! :>)
ReplyDeleteMelissa--Have I met you? I am Shannan's sister in law. We cleaned our house thoroughly the first time the social worker came to our house (Feb. 08)..and she didn't even look at the stuff we worked so hard to clean. Easier said than done, but try not to stress about the cleaning thing(but practically everyone stresses about the cleaning thing for the home visit). We've had alot of "drama" in our attempts to adopt (long story), such that we had to have a second in-home visit about 3 weeks ago b/c so much time lapsed since the last home visit (and our homestudy still isn't quite complete--maybe in another week or 2). The second time the social worker came, there was wet laundry drying on racks in the guest room and 2 baskets of clothes that needed folding on the bed in the guest room. And the home visit still went fine! Don't stress! Melanie
